There are two types of fragrances in my collection. The ones I wear for myself and the ones I test because everyone else is talking about them. The Phlur Berry and Matcha Duo fell into the second category at first. Sweet, creamy, slightly gourmand scents are not my instinctive reach. I gravitate toward skin scents, musks, and anything that feels clean but intimate. Phlur’s Missing Person has been one of my staples for that exact reason. It is soft, familiar, and quietly addictive.
So when I saw Berry and Matcha gaining attention, I was curious but cautious. Gourmand can go wrong very quickly for me. It can feel heavy, overly sugary, or like I have stepped into a bakery at the wrong time. That said, some brands know how to handle sweetness with restraint and polish. Phlur is one of them.
This review is my honest take on the Berry and Matcha Duo, how they perform, how they layer, and who I think will genuinely love them. If you are a sweet scent loyalist, this will be easy reading. If you are like me and usually avoid gourmand, this might surprise you.
Before getting into the duo itself, I need to talk about why I even gave these scents a chance. Phlur as a brand consistently delivers long lasting formulas that do not feel suffocating. Their scents tend to sit close to the skin in a way that feels modern and wearable. Missing Person is proof of that. It lingers for hours in the softest way. It does not announce itself loudly, but it stays.
Another thing I appreciate is how layerable their fragrances are. You can build dimension without creating chaos. That is important with sweeter notes because balance matters. A good layering scent acts like structure in an outfit. It grounds everything.
Even though gourmand is not my typical category, I trust Phlur to approach it thoughtfully. That trust is what made me test Berry and Matcha seriously instead of dismissing them after one spray.
First Impressions of Berry Cream
Berry opens bright and juicy. There is a creamy undertone that gives it softness without turning syrupy. On first spray, I was expecting a burst of candy sweetness. Instead, it felt more like ripe fruit folded into something airy. What surprised me most was how clean it felt. That is not a word people usually associate with berry fragrances, but there is a freshness here that keeps it from becoming cloying. It settles into a slightly creamy, slightly warm sweetness that feels comforting rather than loud.
On my skin, the sweetness calms down after about thirty minutes. What remains is a soft berry haze that blends seamlessly with my natural scent. It lasts longer than I expected for a body mist style formula. I could still smell it on my sweater by evening. That longevity matters because sweet scents can feel wasteful if they disappear quickly.
My Experience With Matcha Milk
Matcha is where things got interesting for me. I have always loved the idea of matcha in fragrance, but it often ends up leaning too lactonic or overly dessert inspired. This version balances creamy notes with a subtle green edge. The opening has a softness that almost feels milky, but there is a grounding element underneath that keeps it from drifting into pure sugar territory. It feels cozy without being heavy. There is a calmness to it that I did not expect.
Wearing Matcha on its own, I found it more versatile than Berry. It worked during the day without feeling out of place. Again, the longevity impressed me. It lingered on my clothes and hair in a way that felt intentional. Not overpowering, just present.
Layering the Duo Together
Phlur excels at layering, and this duo is clearly designed with that in mind. When I combined Berry and Matcha, the result felt fuller and more dimensional. The fruitiness of Berry softened into the creaminess of Matcha, creating a scent that felt almost like a dessert but still wearable.
On days when I wanted something playful, this combination worked beautifully. It felt youthful but not immature. Sweet but not sticky.
I experimented with applying Berry first and then adding Matcha to pulse points. I also tried the reverse. Berry on top made the overall scent brighter. Matcha on top made it smoother and more grounded.
For someone who does not usually gravitate toward gourmand, this layering experience felt surprisingly enjoyable. It gave me control over how sweet I wanted to go.
I need to be honest here. Sweet scents are not typically my identity. I prefer fragrances that feel like skin, linen, clean air, soft musk. Gourmand can sometimes feel like a costume on me. That said, I appreciate when a brand executes sweetness with nuance.
Phlur manages to keep things modern. There is no overwhelming vanilla cloud or syrupy aftertaste. The sweetness feels intentional and refined. It feels styled. Do I see myself reaching for Berry and Matcha daily? Probably not. But do I respect them and enjoy them when I am in the mood for something softer and sweeter? Absolutely.
The Phlur Berry and Matcha Duo challenged my fragrance comfort zone in the best way. As someone who typically avoids gourmand scents, I approached these with skepticism. What I found instead was balance.
Phlur understands how to make sweetness feel polished. They understand longevity without heaviness. They understand layering as an art rather than an afterthought.
Berry is juicy, creamy, and playful. Matcha is soft, cozy, and grounding. Together, they create a scent story that feels modern and wearable.
While these may not replace my beloved Missing Person, they have earned a place in my rotation for days when I want something sweeter but still chic. If you love gourmand fragrances or are looking to explore them without diving into overwhelming sugar territory, this duo is worth testing.
For those who naturally gravitate toward sweeter scents, I think you will genuinely enjoy these. They feel thoughtfully composed and easy to wear. And for anyone like me who usually leans away from sweet, this might be the gentle introduction that changes your mind.
Love,
Rae
